Care Instructions

Taking Care of Your Jewellery

Jewellery is made to be worn and enjoyed. Whether you've created your own piece using Kalitheo findings or purchased finished jewellery, a little care will help keep it looking beautiful for years to come.

Different metals and materials require slightly different care, but following a few simple habits will help preserve their beauty and extend their life.

Everyday Jewellery Care

These simple tips apply to almost all jewellery.

✔ Put your jewellery on last after applying makeup, perfume, lotions and hairspray.

✔ Remove jewellery before exercising, swimming, gardening, showering or washing dishes.

✔ Avoid exposing jewellery to chlorine, bleach and harsh household chemicals.

✔ Wipe jewellery with a soft polishing cloth after wearing to remove skin oils and residue.

✔ Store jewellery separately in soft pouches or jewellery boxes to prevent scratches and tangles.

✔ Never clean jewellery with toothpaste or abrasive cleaners, as they can scratch precious metals and gemstones.

Caring for Sterling Silver Jewellery

Sterling Silver naturally develops tarnish over time when exposed to air and moisture.

To keep your sterling silver bright:

  • Store in an airtight bag or jewellery box.
  • Polish regularly with a quality silver polishing cloth.
  • Wash occasionally using warm water, mild soap and a soft cloth.
  • Dry thoroughly before storing.

A little regular care will keep sterling silver looking beautiful for many years.

Caring for Argentium® 940 Silver

Argentium® 940 is one of the premium materials we use for our handmade findings.

Because Argentium® contains germanium, it offers significantly greater tarnish resistance than traditional Sterling Silver 925 while maintaining the beauty of a precious metal.

To care for Argentium® jewellery:

  • Store in a dry place.
  • Clean with warm water and mild soap if needed.
  • Buff occasionally with a soft polishing cloth.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners.

One of the biggest advantages of Argentium® is that it requires less frequent polishing, making it an excellent choice for jewellery worn regularly.

Caring for Gold Filled Jewellery

Gold Filled jewellery is much thicker than gold plating and can last for many years with proper care.

To keep it looking its best:

  • Avoid perfumes and lotions coming into direct contact.
  • Remove before swimming in chlorinated pools.
  • Clean with warm water and a soft cloth.
  • Store separately to prevent scratches.

Caring for Solid Gold Jewellery

Solid 9ct and 18ct gold are durable precious metals but still benefit from regular cleaning.

Use warm water, mild soap and a soft cloth to remove oils and everyday dirt.

Avoid abrasive cleaners that may dull the polished finish.

Pearl Jewellery Care

Pearls are organic gemstones and require extra care.

  • Put pearl jewellery on last.
  • Remove before showering or swimming.
  • Never soak pearls in jewellery cleaner.
  • Wipe gently with a soft damp cloth after wearing.
  • Store separately from harder gemstones to avoid scratches.

Jewellery Storage Tips

Proper storage helps prevent tarnish, scratches and damage.

We recommend:

  • Individual soft pouches
  • Zip-lock bags for sterling silver
  • Jewellery boxes with separate compartments
  • Keeping jewellery away from direct sunlight and humidity

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I shower wearing my jewellery?

It's best not to. Soap residue and minerals in water can dull the finish of many metals.

Can I clean jewellery with toothpaste?

No. Toothpaste is abrasive and may scratch precious metals and gemstones.

Does Argentium® tarnish?

Argentium® is much more tarnish resistant than traditional Sterling Silver, although all precious metals can eventually develop some tarnish depending on wear and storage.

How often should I polish sterling silver?

Only when needed. Regular wiping with a polishing cloth after wearing helps reduce the need for heavier polishing.

Kalitheo beautiful beads

I have really loved all the different beads from Kalitheo. The Japanese Toyo beads are so beautifully regular , with a wonderful lustre or sparkle. The fifties style beaded bolero project I am working on looks terrific, thanks to these beads. Kalitheo are so good to deal with, and their orders always arrive very promptly. Thank you Kalitheo
